FINE ART/
INSTALLATION

Over the years Paper Dragon Books has been asked to use the skills and materials used in creative and traditional bookbinding to create works of art for large scale gallery installations.

Working for David Zwirner Galleries in 2013 involved taking a small water colour by artist Chris Ofilli and remaking it on a large 6x4 canvas in hand dyed and cut leathers, which was completed with friend and fellow bookbinder Nicky Oliver of Black Fox Bindery, London.  A full breakdown of the problem solving, the process, and the finished result accompanied with a video can be viewed here. The project was very challenging, but a great opportunity to collaborate with a fellow artist and thoroughly enjoyable experience.

I have made work for exhibitions for many artists including a piece for Vik Muniz for an exhibition at the MOMA in Rio De Janeiro. I have always been open to pushing the boundaries back on what is possible, and enjoy complex problem solving, and have over the years been very fortunate to work with friends and artists in that regard.

TV PROPS

If you are making a period piece, many production designers have had to call to contact their local bookbinder. Enjoying proximity to many film and TV studios meant that I have been lucky enough to get to make some interesting props for some great shows, most notably recently for Apple TV's “Dickinson," where -among other objects- an exact replica of Emily Dickinson's Herbarium housed at Harvard was needed. Other objects have included a fake Gutenberg bible, and various other objects for CBS, NBC and other movies. Happily it seems some stories require a book, even if it’s told on screen.
